Data description

Note: the relevant images are subject to copyright of the authors, and cannot be used elsewhere without permission.

For each clinical case, the provided data are:

  • Pre-operative 3T MRI images, including Gadolinium-enhanced T1w and T2 FLAIR scans.
  • Intra-operative Ultrasound (iUS) images, as a 3D volume covering the entire tumor region after craniotomy. Intra-operative ultrasound volumes at three surgical stages (pre-, during,  and post-resection) are provided.
  • Segmentations of brain tumours in pre-operative iUS and resection cavity in during- and post-resection iUS

All medical images used for the challenge were acquired for routine clinical care at St Olavs University Hospital (Trondheim, Norway), after patients gave their informed consent. The imaging data are available in both MINC-2 and NIFTI-1 formats and the segmentations are available in NIFTI-1 format. All images, MRI, iUS, and segmentations are in the same referential space.

Training dataset (23 cases)

The MRI and iUS scans of the training data have been released to the public previously as a dataset article in Medical Physics in 2017, and the 23 patients collection is named REtroSpective Evaluation of Cerebral Tumors (RESECT). Details can be found in the related publication:

The RESECT database contains iUS volumes obtained at different surgical stages: before, during and after tumor resection. Note that the patient IDs are not expected to be continuous.

The segmentation data (brain tumor and resection cavities), the RESECT-SEG dataset are provided in addition to the original RESECT database.  Details can be found in the following preprint:

  • B. Behboodi, F.X. Carton, M. Chabanas, S. De Ribaupierre, O. Solheim, B.K.R. Munkvold, H. Rivaz, Y. Xiao, I. Reinertsen, "RESECT-SEG: Open access annotations of intra-operative brain tumor ultrasound images," arXiv:2207.07494.
